Say hello to some of our talented technical team: Junior Software Developer, Will Brown and Integration Support, Ciaran Puzon.

Welcome to our Inside Constructive series! We talk with Constructive team members across our teams and offices to get to know the people inside the company and learn about their journey to working at Constructive.

Today we’re chatting with Will and Ciaran from our technical team.

What was your journey to working at Constructive and what attracted you to working here?

Will: I started at Constructive in August, 2023. From the moment I read the SEEK job posting, I was enamoured with the company and the position available. Coming out fresh from University, this role provided me with the perfect opportunity to gain practical experience in a nurturing environment.

On top of my studies in Software Engineering and Cybersecurity at UWA, I engaged in a variety of personal software-related projects during my spare time. This provided invaluable experience with a wide range of programming languages and tools used in the industry.

This experience has translated well into working at Constructive, as I have a large degree of responsibility for the code I write and projects that I contribute to.

Ciaran: November 2023 was my start at Constructive. Coming into this role, I had little experience so I was excited to gain real-world skills working in the industry matching my field of study — Computer Science.

What might be a typical day for you at Constructive?

Ciaran: When I first come in, I boot up the laptop and check my emails and messages before going through my jobs for the day. I join in the company-wide stand-up where we go through our goals for the day before looking through our integrations for upgrades and exceptions.

In the afternoon, there’s usually a meeting or two. I enjoy these because I can hear and learn from all my co-workers on what they’re working on — plus I can get their input on any blockers or problems I’m trying to solve.

Will: One of the most enjoyable aspects of working at Constructive for me is the large variety of tasks that I get to engage with. Each day feels like a new adventure, with room to grow and contribute without the day slipping into monotony.

Can you share a moment of your time at Constructive that you’re proud of?

Will: I can think of a variety of projects that I have completed over my time at Constructive that have been rewarding. Many projects have appeared difficult and daunting initially, but with support to work through and complete them, then watching the code being utilised has been an incredibly enjoyable and fulfilling experience.

Ciaran: Setting up my first integration from scratch for a client!

Do you find your work hours flexible around your life and family at Constructive?

Ciaran: The flexible hours are good, especially while still in Uni. It allows me to take days to focus on my studies if necessary, but also work more when Uni is on break.

Will: I have found working at Constructive to be incredibly flexible around my personal life. I injured my foot at the end of January which greatly restricted my mobility over a few weeks. I am grateful for how accommodating the team has been while I recovered from my injury.
